3M Cubitron: From Abrasive Belts to Cut-Off Wheels

It quickly becomes apparent in practice when an abrasive cannot keep pace: the disc barely cuts, the workpiece heats up, and you find yourself pressing harder and harder on the tool. When you choose 3M Cubitron products, however, you can be confident you are working with a professional solution, and that behind the name lies not just a single disc, but an entire product family, ranging from abrasive belts through fibre discs to cut-off wheels. But what makes Cubitron grain different, and which format is suited to which task? That is what this article sets out to explain.

Summary

3M Cubitron is a family of cutting and abrasive products built on 3M’s Precision Shaped Grain (PSG) technology, available in a wide range of formats for machines from belt sanders to angle grinders.

  • Technology: The triangular ceramic grains of 3M Cubitron are electrostatically oriented on the backing and form new cutting edges as they wear.
  • Practical advantage: Cubitron grain cuts quickly and cool, requiring less applied pressure, so the operator tires less easily.
  • Fibre disc: The Cubitron II 982C Fibre Disc delivers up to twice the cut rate, durability, and service life compared with conventional fibre discs.
  • Stainless steel: The Cubitron II 987C Fibre Disc, which contains a grinding aid, and the low-heat 967A Flap Disc are recommended for heat-sensitive surfaces.
  • Cutting: According to the product data sheet, the Cubitron II T41 and T42 Cut-Off Wheels can be used on virtually any material, from stainless steel to aerospace alloys.
  • Range: Flanker, the official 3M distributor in Hungary, currently offers nearly 400 Cubitron product variants in its online catalogue.

What Is 3M Cubitron?

3M Cubitron is one of 3M’s abrasive product families, available from Flanker in the form of Cubitron II products. Their common foundation is 3M’s Precision Shaped Grain (PSG): triangular ceramic grains that are electrostatically oriented on the backing , the base layer that holds the grain. This same grain is found on abrasive belts, fibre discs, flap discs, and grinding and cut-off wheels alike.

The backing varies by format: cloth for belts, vulcanised fibre for fibre discs, and paper or film for hook-and-loop discs. Cubitron is therefore a grain technology that operates on the same principle across a variety of tool formats.

How Does 3M Cubitron grain differ from conventional abrasives?

Compared with conventional abrasives, aluminium oxide, zirconia, or traditional ceramic grain, Cubitron differs in the shape and orientation of its grain. The tips of the triangular grains act as sharp cutting edges and, when they fracture, new edges are formed. As a result, the grain cuts quickly and cool, with less applied pressure.

In practice, this means a self-sharpening effect: the grain retains its cutting ability even as it wears. The grains wear evenly and, because they remain sharp, less frictional heat is generated.

Some Cubitron products also contain a grinding aid: an additive mixed in amongst the grains that further reduces heat generation. This is why these products are also worth choosing for heat-sensitive materials such as stainless steel.

In what formats is 3M Cubitron available?

3M Cubitron grain is available in a wide range of formats: from endless abrasive belts for belt grinders, to fibre discs, flap discs, grinding and cut-off wheels for angle grinders, through to hook-and-loop and quick-change discs. The bulk of Flanker’s Cubitron range currently comprises abrasive belts (185 variants) and discs (153 variants).

Abrasive belts

An endless abrasive belt is a belt joined into a closed loop that runs on a belt grinder. The 3M Cubitron II 994F Endless Abrasive Belt, 36+, 50 mm × 3,500 mm is a cloth-backed belt that cuts quickly and is designed for medium- and high-pressure work on carbon steel.

The 3M Cubitron II 984F Cloth Belt, 75 mm × 4,000 mm, 36+ is likewise intended for medium- and high-pressure work and also contains a grinding aid, making it the better choice in grinding operations where heat generation is the primary concern.

The 784F belt combines formed ceramic and premium aluminium oxide grain on a flexible, waterproof cotton backing with a grinding aid. Its 947A resin bond (the material that holds the grain in place) provides improved heat resistance; this belt is recommended for dry grinding. For further details on belt grinding, see our article on 3M abrasive belts.

Fibre discs

A fibre disc is a rigid abrasive disc with a vulcanised fibre backing, designed for use on angle grinders. The 3M Cubitron II 982C Fibre Disc, 60+, 150 mm × 22 mm features a strong resin bond and is designed for high-pressure work. The 982C delivers up to twice the cut rate, durability, and service life compared with conventional fibre discs, with less grinding pressure, allowing more workpieces to be processed with a single disc.

The disc is primarily recommended for deburring (removing sharp edges), as well as for removing weld seams and mill scale (the oxide layer that forms on metal under heat) on carbon steel, and is also suitable for blending (smoothing the transition between a repaired area and the surrounding surface) and surface defect repair.

On stainless steel, the 987C is the obvious choice: this rigid fibre-backed disc also contains a grinding aid, so less heat is generated and the risk of burning (surface damage caused by overheating) is reduced. For detailed information on the industrial use of fibre discs, see our dedicated article on 3M fibre discs.

Grinding discs

Grinding discs are discs used for grinding on angle grinders; in this format, the T27 designation indicates a depressed centre design. The 3M Cubitron II Flexible Depressed Center Grinding Disc, T27, 115 mm × 3 mm × 22.23 mm, 36+ is designed for fast grinding, shaping, and blending of various metals; the 22.23 mm figure is the diameter of the centre hole. This disc cuts quickly with low heat generation, yet remains flexible.

For heavy-duty weld removal, the rigid T27 Depressed Center Grinding Disc (115 mm × 7 mm) is recommended, it features a rigid bond construction designed for high-pressure grinding and can be used on stainless steel, mild steel, and aerospace alloys. The Cut and Grind Wheel (T27, 125 mm × 4.2 mm) is suitable for both cutting and grinding without changing tools, on stainless steel and mild steel.

Further details can be found in our article on grinding discs; the full range of cut-off and grinding wheels is available in the Abrasive Wheels category.

Cut-Off wheels

A cut-off wheel is a thin disc designed for cutting: the T41 Cut-Off Wheel has a flat profile, while the T42 has a depressed centre. The 3M Cubitron II Cut-Off Wheel, T42, Depressed Centre is a 2.5 mm thick wheel with a 22.23 mm bore that can be used on virtually any material, including stainless steel, mild steel, and aerospace alloys. It outperforms 3M’s own High Performance Cut-Off Wheels in both cut rate and service life.

Flap discs, hook-and-loop and quick-change discs

A flap disc, also known as a flap grinding disc, consists of overlapping abrasive sheets known as flaps. The 967A Flap Disc is designed for flat surfaces and outside edges, from low to medium-high pressure. This disc is primarily recommended for pre-paint surface preparation and for stainless steel, where final surface quality and freedom from gouging are important, meaning the disc should not dig into the surface. The 969F is manufactured with polyester cloth flaps and a grinding aid.

Which 3M Cubitron product should you choose for the task at hand?

When selecting a Cubitron product, it is always worth clarifying first exactly what task it will be used for. For carbon steel weld seams, the 982C Fibre Disc is recommended; for stainless steel, the grinding-aid-containing 987C Fibre Disc or the 967A Flap Disc; for cutting, the T41 or T42 Cut-Off Wheel; and for belt grinders, the 994F or 984F belt.

  • Weld seam removal and deburring on carbon steel: 982C Fibre Disc; for confined spaces, the Roloc 982C.
  • Stainless steel where heat and burning are a concern: 987C Fibre Disc or the low-heat 967A Flap Disc.
  • Cutting on stainless steel, mild steel, aerospace alloys and other materials: T41 or T42 Cut-Off Wheel; where cutting and grinding are needed with the same wheel, the Cut and Grind Wheel.
  • Grinding, shaping, and blending on various metals: Flexible T27 Depressed Center Grinding Disc.
  • Heavy-duty weld removal: Rigid T27 Depressed Center Grinding Disc.
  • Belt grinder, medium to high pressure: 994F for carbon steel; 984F where a grinding aid is also required; 947A for dry work.
  • Pre-paint surface preparation, bodywork: Hookit 737U disc and file belt, 950U for bare bodywork, and the 775L film-backed disc.

Flanker’s online catalogue currently lists nearly 400 Cubitron II product variants, from endless abrasive belts through fibre discs to cut-off wheels. Flanker also provides expert advice to assist with product selection.

What does Precision Shaped Grain (PSG) mean?

PSG (Precision Shaped Grain) refers to triangular ceramic grains that are electrostatically oriented on the backing. The tips act as sharp cutting edges and, when they fracture, new edges are formed, allowing the grain to cut quickly with less applied pressure and lower heat generation.

How much faster is 3M Cubitron than conventional abrasives?

Cubitron’s speed cannot be expressed as a single figure applicable to every product. According to the product data sheets, the 982C Fibre Disc delivers up to twice the cut rate, durability, and service life compared with conventional fibre discs, while the T41 and T42 Cut-Off Wheels outperform 3M High Performance wheels in both cut rate and service life. Actual results depend on the format, grit size, and application.

Which 3M Cubitron product is suitable for stainless steel?

For grinding, the grinding-aid-containing 987C Fibre Disc and the low-heat 967A Flap Disc are recommended, and for smaller disc sizes, the Roloc 984F. For cutting, the T41 and T42 Cut-Off Wheels, and for heavy-duty weld removal, the rigid T27 Depressed Center Grinding Disc can also be used on stainless steel.

What is the purpose of a grinding aid?

A grinding aid is an additive mixed amongst the grains that reduces heat generation, thereby lowering the risk of burning. This is particularly significant on stainless steel. Cubitron products containing a grinding aid include, among others, the 984F and 784F belts, the 987C Fibre Disc, and the 969F Flap Disc.

Is it possible to cut and grind with a single wheel?

Yes — the Cubitron II Cut and Grind Wheel (T27, 125 mm × 4.2 mm) is designed for exactly this purpose: it can be used for both cutting and grinding without changing tools, on stainless steel and mild steel. In other cases, a cut-off wheel is used for cutting and a grinding disc for grinding.

What do the T27, T29, T41, and T42 designations mean?

The designation indicates the shape of the wheel, and its meaning differs by wheel type. For grinding and cut-off wheels, T27 and T42 denote a depressed centre, whilst T41 denotes a flat (straight) profile. For flap discs, T27 denotes a flat profile and T29 a conical one. In the Cubitron II range, T27 therefore appears for both grinding discs and flap discs, but refers to a different shape in each case.
